I like to put the frozen fruit and liquids together to start and turn on the blender. Then when those are blending up I add all the other ingredients. If you add everything in together at the same time – some blenders will splat the powdery ingredients against the top and sides of the blender and they won’t get mixed in really well. This recipe has a lot of fiber in it. And the brewer’s yeast can cause some people intestinal discomfort when they’re first getting used to it. So you might consider putting in half as much of brewer’s yeast and flax seeds in the beginning and then ramping up.

Here’s a more detailed explanation of the ingredients and why I chose them:

-1 cup coconut, almond or soy milk. Soy is an inflammatory agent for many people, so I prefer to stick with coconut, or almond milk.
-1 cup water
-Approx. 10 to 16 oz frozen fruit. Strawberries, blueberries, and blackberries are really good because they’re packed with antioxidants. Adding in a banana, pineapple, grapes, or cherries will add some sweetness to the shake and make it really tasty.
-1 tablespoon whole flax seeds – high fiber, protein, antioxidants, and omega 3s. Has B vitamins, magnesium, and manganese.
-1 teaspoon brewer’s yeast – loaded with B vitamins. Has protein, chromium, and phosphorus. Some people have trouble digesting brewer’s yeast so if you get an upset stomach try eliminating this one.
-2 raw eggs from a cage free chicken. I previously used protein powders but was a little turned off when I learned about their manufacturing processes. So now I substitute a raw egg for the protein. Many people have an aversion to raw eggs because of the fear of salmonella. That’s generally more of a risk from the overcrowded, unhealthy egg factories that don’t give their chickens the ability to roam. Their chickens get so sick from these conditions that they have to treat them with hormones and antibiotics. Cage free chickens not treated with these things are much healthier and produce healthier eggs too. You don’t taste the raw egg and it has so many awesome micronutrients that your body will thank you for it!
-1 heaping tablespoon organic, EatGreenTea leaves. Loaded with powerful antioxidants. Eating the whole green tea leaf gives you a sustained jitter-free energy boost all day long.
-1 teaspoon raw chicory root – has the highest concentrations of prebiotics of any whole food.
The chicory root is hard to find, so don’t sweat it. And we only sometimes do the wheat germ so consider that one optional too.

I have been enjoying this “breakfast shake” for a few months and loving it!! I don’t like fruit, so I don’t eat it. With this shake I can get my fruit servings every day and enjoy it. I have a hard time getting started in the morning. The shake is fun and easy to make and I can make it, grab it and I’m out the door. The very best part though is that I have so much more energy and I feel more alert all morning. I used to have 1 cup of coffee each morning to get going. Then I had to suffer the shakey feeling and the upset stomach. Now I have more of that bounce without all the icky feelings.
Thanks for all your research and great information!!!!
